About Me

My photo
I am a mom, a wife, and a teacher-librarian. I have four boys at home: Main Man (44), #1 (14), #2 (11), and #3 (7). Although they keep me very busy, I also look after a library for an elementary student population of 500 (give or take). I love my family; I love my job.

Streams of Consciousness II: The Return

Sunday...#2's first guitar recital. He's taken lessons for two and a half years, but his previous teachers didn't "do" recitals. I was so proud! He played a song he wrote himself. It sounded bouncy and Spanish, so he called it "Bouncing Ball", only he used the Spanish translation that he painstakingly researched on the internet.

Monday...Teachers' work day. It's what they call "Turnaround Day", the day between the first and second semester in the high schools. Students across the division get the day off, and teachers get to use it for catch-up or prep for the future. I call it "Breathing Day", and I worked hard. Still not caught up, but not quite as far behind now.

Tuesday...Went to see Babel. Wasn't nearly the profound film I was led to believe it would be. Left me depressed and sad. Didn't really make me think, just left me empty. Some have compared it to Crash from last year. Now that was a movie! It made me think and reflect. Although it had its moments full of sadness and despair, it ended with a resounding note of hope. If you are vexed in the future about just which DVD to pick up at the rental place, and Babel and Crash are in your hands, please go for Crash!

There's so much more to write, but so little time. Stay tuned for Streams of Consciousness III, coming soon to a blog near you.

Thanks for the warning. I have it on my Netflix list, so will see what I think.

Glad you are more caught up on your work! Must be a great feeling, eh???

Thanks for explaining about the stay at home stuff and WOW, that is really disturbing about Harry Potter. I mean Dan. I saw that on another blog. What on earth are his parents thinking???

I to have Babel on netflix and crash havent seen either one. I did take The Devil wears Prada and The Illusionist with me on my trip to Florida and finished both while waiting in airports yesterday. I loved The Devil wears Prada but did not care for the Illusionist at all. I knew what was happening and didn't leave any surprise.

What's with all this streams of consciousness stuff? I'd prefer streams of Dr. Pepper or Vietnamese Iced Coffee.

Haven't seen any of the Best Pic nominees this year and not really sure if (GASP!!!) I care. Seem to be in a real doldrums for movies. More exciting things happening in my life I guess.

Two hours about the Queen and her emotional problems - what an utter waste of celluloid. And Dreamgirls looks like it'll two hours plus of the wailing we hear on American Idol. Pass.

The only thing I'm looking forward to is that Ennio Morricone is getting an Honorary Oscar. As composer of over 500 films scores (The Mission, Cinema Paradiso, Once Upon A Time In The West), he is truly the maestro of movies.

Babel just ain't my kind of movie. Crash? Never heard of it. I'll read some reviews...

I'll bet Mentok's pretty depressed that Gaius Baltar isn't a cylon? That poor man.

Read someone else on the blog, LM, who had equally disappointing observations about Babel.

Wasn't Crash the film that won the Oscar?

I just wrote a huge long comment to each one of you and blogger wouldn't take it. I lost the whole thing. What a bummer!

I don't have time right now to rewrite it, but I did try. Later today when I have a few spare minutes (!!), I will try to recreate my words of wisdom. :-)

Hi again LM.
Yesterday, Blogger really acted up!
I couldn't get into my own blog or the comment box for almost a day.
Thought I had lost the whole thing but today, it's all fine again.

So I know how you feel. What I do is if I'm writing something slightly longer in a comment box. I keep pressing on copy so if it goes off, then I can just paste it all back again.

love you lots

Okay - here goes. One more try. Thanks, Susan, for the tip. I shall follow it this time.

Lowa - You'll have to let me know what you think of Babel when you see it. And - at the risk of encountering Hippo's wrath - I don't actually think of the Daniel Radcliffe thing as disturbing. I agree with what Katy said over on Mentok's blog - he's probably starting to think of his career post-Harry. I mean, he won't be able to play the bespectacled teenage wizard forever, will he?

Katy - I think you and I may be movie soul-mates. I agree on both counts. I thought Jessica Biel was atrocious in The Illusionist. Please try Crash. It's spectacular.

Grumps - You're right, but I would prefer streams of Diet Coke. You're wrong about The Queen. It was a really good movie, and it wasn't about the Queen's emotional problems at all. What you really should see, though, is Little Miss Sunshine. Run, don't walk to the nearest venue offering it for your viewing pleasure. You will love it!

Hippo - You're right; I don't think you would like Babel, but I think you should give Crash a try. When it won Best Picture at the Oscars last year, I cheered.

Susan - Yes, Crash won Best picture last year, and it definitely deserved it. Thanks again for the tip about "copying" periodically. Looks like things may be working this time.

okay I am moving crah up in my que so i should have it next week. I am sure grumpy will be happy to see it since the last 4 were girls movie - one being the notebook which was so awesome

Thanks Mama. I saw a trailer for it at the Apple Quicktime site and it looked quirky and cute. It didn't get a lot of press or box office until now. Seems to be a recent trend that Oscar voters turn away from pics getting a lot of buzz.

As for The Queen, let me put it this way. I couldn't care what it's about. I have no desire to see any movie about the British monarchy unless it's a news reel of Canada finally severing it's ties to that tired, crumbling farce of a governmemt system.

On a less grumpy note, we'll probably see you in Mentokville for the Provincials on the the 23rd. Haven't finalized plans but will let you know closer to the date.

Katy - I sure hope you like Crash, now that I pressured you into it. I'm afraid I didn't like The Notebook as much as you did: just a little too sappy for me. I did, however, love Nicholas Sparks's novel The Wedding. I found it more interesting than The Notebook. It is, in effect, a sequel to The Notebook, as it deals with the grown son of the main characters in The Notebook and his family.

Grumps - You really are a Grump, aren't you? ;-) I guarantee that Little Miss Sunshine will make even a Grump like you smile. I'm sure Grumpspouse would also enjoy it, but it's not appropriate for the younger crowd. We'll be watching for you on the 23rd. I have the 21st - 26th off work. Any chance of you being able to stick around for the Oscarfest on the 25th? I expect not, but it sure would be great if you could.
