I came home from work exhausted and slightly headachey today. It seemed like an awfully long week. After supper, I fell asleep on the couch while reading (not a comment on the book). I was told later that Main Man had fallen asleep on the other end of the couch. Meanwhile, our kids were having a grand old time eating popcorn and watching tv in our bedroom. I know I'm going to be sleeping on popcorn crumbs tonight.
The boys locked themselves out of the house today in -27 degree Celsius weather. Luckily we have an amazing neighbour who fed them lunch and looked after them after school until I could get home. I often wonder what I would do without our wonderful neighbours.
Last Friday and again tonight, we had a family game of Kaiser, an old card game I used to play as a kid on the school bus. Ever played it? It was a blast from my past. I'm a player, though. When I'm playing a game, I like to play the game. Main Man and the boys would rather joke around and distract each other. By the end of the evening, I was quite tired of people speaking just to hear their own voices. I know, I know...I'm a party pooper. They've already informed me of the fact. My question is this, though - why even play a game if you're constantly going to forget whose turn it is?
So it's Valentine season. How does everyone feel about that? I don't mind it. It's kind of a nice day for teachers. I'll get lots of little "for the teacher" valentine cards and maybe even a few chocolates. Still, here at home on the other end, I'm not sure how much I like supervising a kindergartner printing out the names of all his friends. Grade 1 is so much better. Guess I can look forward to that. #3's biggest concern is that he wants to write "I love you" on the valentine for one specific girl in his class, but he's a little ambivalent about the thought. I figure he's just another male who is afraid to commit.
And is it just me, or was Anna Nicole Smith more than just a little creepy?
Thoughts on motherhood, marriage, education, and life in general...

Kaiser?? Sounds familiar, not sure if I played it or not.
LOL Man, I feel for you. I know what you mean about them getting all distracted. Stud and Jock always start wrestling and punching each other and often someone is in tears and upset. I am always wondering what the point is in playing the games?? If they are not around or involved, all is well. Cryptic and I just got done a round of "Blink" and "Boggle" after Clown slaughtered me (AGAIN) in Sequence...while he did that, Cryptic and Princess played Stratego. Can you tell we enjoy games?? LOL
V-day?? Normally it is a let down, cause Stud hates it so doesn't really recognise it. I am hopeful that this year he will feel differently and get me a cute little stuffed animal holding candy or something. I have always wanted something like that on V day for some reason. I find it interesting that when I lived in Regina and he was in SC and we were not married, that he went to a lot of trouble to send me roses. Since then?? Nothing much and he admits to hating it. Maybe this year will be different.
That is SO CUTE about # 3! CUTE! I remember when Cryptic was Clown's age, he loved this one little girl and actually saved his money and bought her some little bracelets. He was too shy to give them to her at school, so I called her Dad and asked if we could have her address. She was pleased with them and Cryptic came home beaming one day soon after and informed me that she was wearing them that day and he caught her looking at him and smiling a lot. Now she has a boyfriend and Cryptic is sad because he thinks he and she are too young for "nonsense like that". I agree of course! He is not sure that she realises who he even is, since he was out of the school system for so long and has his hair dyed and long now.
Ok, sorry. I better get to bed. Have great weekend! Hope you don't get popcorn stuck anywhere too uncomfy:)
Hi LM,
Enjoyed the entire read. :-)
I do feel that Valentine's is overly-commercialised but classroom activities are always fun.
And you definitely deserve more than your share of Valentine greetings.
You sound truly dedicated to your job, LM.
On the flipside, I do feel really sad about Anne Nicole-Smith's death. She lost her grown-up son as soon as her baby daughter was born and that must have been one of the most horrific traumas a mother would have to go through. I feel sad at the tragedy that engulfed her. May she rest in peace!
hugs
i like card games. i actually enjoyed playing domino with my mom and her friends when I visited her last month.
not sure about the valentines thing I mean yah I like getting the candy and presents but its sad that some people only get those things on that day. I am lucky Grumpy spoils me even on non valentine days
Lowa - Of all my readers, you were the one who I thought might have played Kaiser. I've read that it may have some Saskatchewan roots. Haha - I just noticed that in my V-day thoughts I never even mentioned Main Man. We usually commemorate it somehow. This year it may be a little toned down. With all of our renovations and other expenses, lots of things are a little toned down these days. :-)
Susan - I know what you are saying about Anna Nicole. The whole thing is very sad, but I have to maintain that it's all quite creepy, as well.
Katy - You sure have a winner there in Grumpy. Hold on tight - he's a keeper!
Fortunately, Grumpspouse and I are on the same page. We acknowledge V-Day in small, affordable ways. Anything else would be ridiculous at this time in our lives.
I've developed a response for when I get asked at work umpteen times what I'm getting my spouse. I tell them, "I work three jobs, that's my wife's Valentine's Day present."
Grumps - I can't really complain at all. On Monday, we get to use my Christmas present - tickets to see the Barenaked Ladies in concert. That will probably be our V-day celebration, as well.
Hey - remember all those Kaiser evenings you, Grumpspouse, Mentok and I had in the old days? Have you taught GrumpsJr and BabyGrumps how to play? We could have a tournament now!
Well, I did check out the link you sent...I dunno. I was never much into card games, not too good with them. I am easily confused. I do recall classmates playing it a lot, now you mention it. And on the bus, like you said you did. Maybe I can try it out soon!
About the Valentines. Sorry I misunderstood:) LOL Stud doesn't like the commericalization of it and always says there should not be just one day set aside. I agree, but normally he STILL wouldln't do anything. Lately, he is more romantic and doing sweet things. Even brought me flowers today when he was out running errands:) Teehee. Was very sweet! I hope that you get a lot of nice treats next week at school!
Flowers for no reason? Wow - lucky girl!
How could I forget. "Your ace, Agnes" is still one of our favourite card playing lines. We've taught the Grumpskins several games but are just getting into trick games. But cards aren't a big thing because we are usually too brain dead to do that. Next year may be better.
Looks like we may not make it Mentokville for provincials afterall, except for Grumps Jr. Baby Grumps' meet has been moved to Friday, meaning we have to be two places at once. G Jr is traveling with a group and being billeted so we're with Baby G. We do have a meet that way in March so we'll let you know of plans then.
Grumps - What a bummer! For us and for GrumpsJr. I will try my best to get over and watch him. Maybe there will be a few more from our family who can make it, as well.
Good luck to Baby G.
Anna Nicole Smith isn't just a little creepy, she's a whole lot creepy. I feel sorry for her little baby girl who is going to have 3 scuzz-buckets fighting for custody, not because they love her but because they love the money they hope she'll inherit.
